Travel Assistance for Non-Urgent Medical Care

Provided by Island Health

Provides funded transportation for non-emergency medical care outside the community.
Island Health's travel assistance program provides funded transportation that supports people in many rural and remote regions who face barriers for needed medical travel outside of their community to an Island Health facility or service. The transportation contractors provide door-to-door, non-emergency patient transportation services, primarily facilitating trips to and from Island Health appointments, facilities, or locations, not within the patient’s own community.

When to Choose:
  • Travel is required for a non-emergency medical appointment in another community
  • The appointment is with an Island Health facility or affiliate site
  • The patient lives in a rural or remote community within the Island Health region
  • The patient has difficulty arranging or paying for transportation on their own
  • The patient requires door-to-door travel support to get to the appointment safely and reliably

How to Access:
  1. Call or email to arrange a ride or get more information

  2. Patient to provide the following information via telephone or email:
    • Their full name, contact information and date of birth
    • Their home community
    • The appointment date, time and location
    • The physician/provider's name
    • Any accessibility or mobility needs (wheelchair, walker, support person, etc.)

  3. The team will help coordinate travel options with the patient.
