What is the eligibility criteria for MAiD?
- Patient must be eligible for publicly funded health services in Canada i.e. have MSP.
- This illness, disease or disability causes intolerable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be relieved by any means that the person finds acceptable.
- Patient must be at least 18 years old and capable of providing informed consent throughout the assessment process.
- Patient must have a serious and incurable illness, disease, or disability that is in an advanced state of irreversible decline.
The MAiD Process in Island Health Authority Area:
- Patient speaks to their doctor or nurse practitioner about the end-of-life care options available, as the MAiD navigation process varies across the Island.
- Patient must complete the Request Form, and submit it directly to the Island Health Authority MAiD Care Coordinator (contact information below)
- The MAiD Care Coordinator will ensure that the patient is assessed by two different doctors/nurse practitioners. If they are not sure whether the patient is capable of making the decision, a medical professional with expertise in mental capacity may be consulted.
- Patient will receive navigation support on next steps from their primary care provider, MAiD provider, and/or Island Health Authority MAiD Care Coordinator.
