The Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Care Coordination Service provides an overview of MAiD services, eligibility and how to access this service.
Medical Assistance in Dying is legal in Canada for eligible patients, and refers to a doctor or nurse practitioner helping a person, at their request, to end their life. The patient must want to voluntarily and intentionally end their life, and starts this process by speaking with their primary care provider about end-of-life care options available, navigation assistance and/or provide referrals to another provider.

What is the eligibility criteria for MAiD?
  • Patient must be eligible for publicly funded health services in Canada i.e. have MSP.
  • This illness, disease or disability causes intolerable physical or psychological suffering that cannot be relieved by any means that the person finds acceptable.
  • Patient must be at least 18 years old and capable of providing informed consent throughout the assessment process.
  • Patient must have a serious and incurable illness, disease, or disability that is in an advanced state of irreversible decline.
Note: Should the patient choose to go ahead with Medical Assistance in Dying, they can always change their mind and stop the process any time. If they pursue MAiD, palliative care support is still available to them.

The MAiD Process in Island Health Authority Area:
  • Patient speaks to their doctor or nurse practitioner about the end-of-life care options available, as the MAiD navigation process varies across the Island.
  • Patient must complete the Request Form, and submit it directly to the Island Health Authority MAiD Care Coordinator (contact information below)
  • The MAiD Care Coordinator will ensure that the patient is assessed by two different doctors/nurse practitioners. If they are not sure whether the patient is capable of making the decision, a medical professional with expertise in mental capacity may be consulted.
  • Patient will receive navigation support on next steps from their primary care provider, MAiD provider, and/or Island Health Authority MAiD Care Coordinator.
